GST Registration in India: Eligibility, Documents, Process and Cancellation Rules

GST Registration in India is required for businesses that cross the applicable turnover limit or fall under a category where registration is compulsory. A registered business receives a GSTIN, can issue tax invoices and may claim eligible input tax credit under the GST law.

Registration is not based only on the amount of sales. The type of supply, location of the business, nature of customers and business activity can also affect the requirement. This guide explains who should register, what documents are needed, how to apply online and when registration may be cancelled.

What is GST registration?

GST registration is the process through which a business becomes recognised as a taxable person under the Goods and Services Tax system. After approval, the taxpayer receives a fifteen-digit Goods and Services Tax Identification Number, commonly called a GSTIN.

The GSTIN is linked to the PAN of the business or person and the State or Union Territory in which the registration is obtained. A separate registration may be required for different States or Union Territories, subject to the applicable rules.

Who must obtain GST Registration in India?

A person generally becomes liable for registration when aggregate turnover crosses the applicable threshold during a financial year. The threshold is commonly:

Business category

General threshold

Exclusive supply of goods

Up to ₹40 lakh in many States, subject to conditions and notified exceptions

Supply of services or goods and services

Up to ₹20 lakh in many States

Specified special-category States

Lower thresholds may apply

These limits are summaries of the general framework. The actual limit can depend on the State, type of supply and notifications in force. A business should check the latest CBIC and GST Portal guidance before relying on a threshold.

Cases where registration may be compulsory

Some persons may need registration even when turnover is below the normal threshold. Depending on the applicable provisions, compulsory registration can include certain:

  • Persons making specified inter-State taxable supplies

  • Casual taxable persons

  • Non-resident taxable persons

  • Persons liable to pay tax under reverse charge

  • E-commerce operators and certain suppliers selling through electronic platforms

  • Input Service Distributors

  • Persons deducting or collecting tax under specified GST provisions

  • Agents or other notified categories

There are also statutory exceptions and special reliefs for particular activities. Therefore, a business should examine the exact provision instead of assuming that every inter-State or online sale automatically requires registration.

What is aggregate turnover?

Aggregate turnover is calculated on an all-India basis for the same PAN. It generally includes taxable supplies, exempt supplies, exports and inter-State supplies of persons having the same PAN. It excludes GST and certain inward supplies on which tax is payable under reverse charge.

Businesses should maintain a PAN-wise turnover record and include supplies from all applicable locations while checking registration liability.

Documents required for GST Registration in India

The exact documents depend on the constitution of the business. Common documents include:

  • PAN of the business or applicant

  • Aadhaar and identity proof of promoters, partners or authorised signatories

  • Photograph of the authorised person

  • Proof of principal place of business

  • Ownership document, rent agreement or consent letter

  • Recent electricity bill or other address evidence

  • Bank account details, where requested

  • Certificate of incorporation, partnership deed or registration certificate

  • Authorisation letter or board resolution for the authorised signatory

The address proof should be clear and consistent with the details entered in the application. If the premises are rented, keep the rent agreement and ownership or utility proof available.

How to apply for GST registration online

  1. Visit the official GST Portal at gst.gov.in.

  2. Select Services, Registration and New Registration.

  3. Choose the taxpayer type, State, district and legal name as recorded in PAN.

  4. Enter the PAN, email address and mobile number.

  5. Verify the one-time passwords and obtain the Temporary Reference Number.

  6. Use the reference number to continue Part B of the application.

  7. Enter business, promoter, authorised signatory, bank and business-place details.

  8. Upload the required documents.

  9. Complete Aadhaar authentication or the applicable verification process.

  10. Submit the application using the permitted electronic verification method.

After submission, the applicant receives an Application Reference Number. The department may approve the application, request clarification or schedule verification according to the applicable procedure.

After GST registration approval

Once approved, download the registration certificate and display the GSTIN at the principal place of business. The GSTIN should also be shown on tax invoices, bills of supply and other prescribed documents.

The registered person must maintain proper accounts, issue correct invoices, file the applicable GST returns and pay tax by the prescribed due date. Registration also creates compliance responsibilities even during periods with no sales.

Amendment of GST registration details

Changes such as a new business address, additional place of business, authorised signatory or contact detail may require amendment of the registration. Some changes are core fields and may require approval, while other non-core fields may be updated through the portal.

Do not continue using outdated details on invoices after an approved change. Update billing software, invoices and customer records at the same time.

Cancellation of GST registration

Registration may be cancelled by the taxpayer or by the proper officer in circumstances permitted under the GST law. Common reasons include closure of business, transfer of business, change in constitution, amalgamation or a business no longer being liable for registration.

A taxpayer should apply for cancellation through the GST Portal and provide the required effective date and reason. Cancellation does not remove liabilities for periods before cancellation. Final return and tax payment requirements may still apply.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using a business name that does not match PAN records

  • Uploading unclear or incomplete address documents

  • Selecting the wrong business constitution

  • Ignoring turnover from another State under the same PAN

  • Choosing an incorrect nature of business activity

  • Failing to complete Aadhaar authentication

  • Issuing invoices with an incorrect GSTIN

  • Assuming that cancellation ends earlier tax liabilities

Conclusion

GST Registration in India depends on turnover, State, supply type and the nature of the business. Before applying, check the latest official requirements, prepare accurate documents and use the correct PAN and business details. After receiving the GSTIN, maintain regular records and meet return-filing obligations.
