GSTR-2B is a monthly, static statement that helps a registered taxpayer review input tax credit information available from supplier-filed documents. It is an important tool for reconciling purchase records before claiming credit in GSTR-3B.

However, GSTR-2B is not itself a tax credit approval or a GST return. A taxpayer must still check the actual invoice, receipt of goods or services, business use and other conditions under the GST law before claiming input tax credit.

What is GSTR-2B?

GSTR-2B is an auto-drafted statement of input tax credit information made available on the GST Portal. It is generally generated for a month after the relevant supplier and other document data has been filed into the GST system.

The statement is static for the relevant period. Later changes made by a supplier normally appear in the statement for the period in which the amendment is reported, rather than changing the earlier statement.

What information appears in GSTR-2B?

Depending on the taxpayer and transaction, the statement may contain information relating to:

  • Invoices and debit notes reported by registered suppliers

  • Credit notes reported by suppliers

  • Documents filed through GSTR-1 or the Invoice Furnishing Facility

  • Supplies reported by certain special-category taxpayers

  • Input Service Distributor documents reported in GSTR-6

  • Import of goods data received from the relevant customs system

  • Information showing whether credit may be available or not available

The exact data displayed depends on the documents filed by suppliers and the applicable system integration. A missing document does not automatically prove that a purchase was not made, but it should be investigated before claiming credit.

GSTR-2B versus GSTR-2A

Point

GSTR-2B

GSTR-2A

Nature

Static statement for a tax period

Dynamic statement that can change when suppliers upload or amend data

Main use

Monthly ITC reconciliation before return filing

Monitoring purchase-related documents reported by suppliers

Update behaviour

Later supplier changes generally appear in a later period

Earlier-period information can change when new data is reported

Taxpayer action

Use as one source for checking ITC eligibility

Use for ongoing tracking and follow-up

Businesses should not rely on only one statement. Compare GSTR-2B, the purchase register, supplier invoices, payment records and the applicable GST return.

Is GSTR-2B enough to claim ITC?

No. The appearance of an invoice in GSTR-2B does not by itself make the credit eligible. The taxpayer must satisfy the conditions prescribed under Section 16 of the CGST Act and other applicable provisions.

Before claiming credit, confirm that:

  • The business has a valid tax invoice or prescribed document.

  • The goods or services have been received.

  • The purchase is used or intended for business purposes.

  • The credit is not blocked under Section 17(5).

  • The tax amount and GSTIN are correct.

  • The credit has not already been claimed.

  • Any required payment or reversal condition has been considered.

How to download GSTR-2B

  1. Log in to the official GST Portal.

  2. Open Services and Returns.

  3. Select the relevant return dashboard and tax period.

  4. Open the auto-drafted input tax credit statement.

  5. View the document details and summary.

  6. Download the statement in the available format.

  7. Save the file with the month and GSTIN for future reconciliation.

The portal menu may change when GSTN introduces new functionality. Always follow the instructions visible after logging in.

How to reconcile GSTR-2B with purchase records

  1. Export the purchase register for the relevant month.

  2. Download the corresponding GSTR-2B statement.

  3. Match the supplier GSTIN, invoice number and invoice date.

  4. Compare taxable value, tax rate and tax amount.

  5. Identify invoices appearing in both records.

  6. Separate invoices in the books but missing from the statement.

  7. Check invoices in GSTR-2B that are not present in the books.

  8. Review credit notes, duplicate invoices and amendments.

  9. Remove blocked, personal-use or otherwise ineligible credit.

  10. Claim only the eligible amount in the applicable GST return.

Common mismatch reasons

Differences may occur because the supplier has not filed the relevant return, used the wrong GSTIN, entered an incorrect invoice number, reported the invoice in another period or uploaded an amended document.

Other reasons include purchase returns, credit notes, duplicate entries, timing differences and invoices recorded by the buyer but not yet reported by the supplier.

What to do when an invoice is missing

First, verify that the invoice is genuine and correctly recorded in the purchase register. Contact the supplier and request correction or filing in the appropriate return.

Do not claim credit only because the goods were received if the other legal conditions are not satisfied. Keep a follow-up list of missing invoices and review it before each return is filed.

GSTR-2B and GSTR-3B

GSTR-2B helps the taxpayer decide which purchase-related credits require review before entering eligible ITC in GSTR-3B. It does not automatically transfer every displayed amount into the return.

Compare the eligible credit with the relevant tables of GSTR-3B and record explanations for exclusions, reversals and timing differences. Read our GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B guide for the return-filing process.

Example of reconciliation

Particular

Amount

ITC appearing in GSTR-2B

₹40,000

Invoice not received in business records

₹5,000

Blocked or personal-use credit

₹3,000

Credit requiring supplier clarification

₹2,000

Credit considered for review

₹30,000

This example is for understanding only. The final eligible credit depends on the invoices, receipt of supply, business use and all applicable GST conditions.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Claiming the full amount shown in GSTR-2B without checking eligibility

  • Ignoring blocked credit under Section 17(5)

  • Failing to reconcile supplier GSTINs

  • Claiming duplicate invoices

  • Ignoring credit notes or purchase returns

  • Using an old statement after supplier amendments

  • Not following up on missing invoices

  • Failing to maintain reconciliation evidence

Conclusion

GSTR-2B is a useful monthly reconciliation statement, but it is not a substitute for checking invoices and GST eligibility conditions. Match the statement with your purchase register, remove ineligible credit, follow up on missing documents and claim only the amount supported by the law.
